Here at true faith we’ve always prided ourselves upon our strongly internationalist flavour and sought to find out more about what is happening with football all around the world. The added ingredient to that is the Geordie diaspora spreads far and wide and you lot are in some weird and wonderful places around the world. So, we manage to get pieces about football from our fellow supporters looking at football on foreign fields through the same kind of perspective as you and I more or less.
Here’s a taste of what is in the true faith SUMMER SPECIAL from our writers around the world:
A SEASON IN SENEGAL – Readers of the true faith website will know Chris Brolly has been posting Blogs throughout the season and giving us a fascinating insight into life in Senegal. This piece is a reflection of a full season living in Senegal where Chris has not only learnt much about the way of life out there but he has additionallyimmersed himself in Senegalese football culture. Remember this is the country of Papiss Demba Cisse, Demba Ba and many others who have plied their trade in the Premier League and other top European leagues. Chris has played a blinder with the photos he has sent us and for those of you with enquiring minds, you’ll love this warmly written piece about a slice of African football life by a dedicated Black & Whiter.
GEORDIES HERE, GEORDIES THERE – Dan Gordon was lucky enough to spend a weekend in Germany towards the end of last season and like any good, upright Mag decided no trip to the home of the Bundesliga was complete without a trip to a game in wat is quickly coming to be acknowledged as Europe’s best league for fans. Dan took in the Mainz v Hamburg match at the Coface Arena. It was something of a relegation doh-fight and this piece is a really well written piece about the whole atmosphere and the crack Dan and his mates had with German fans at the game. Its a marvellous insight into a league not far from us and it will encourage more of you to have the trip across the channel to see what all the fuss is about.
ACROPOLIS NOW – All of you will know that Newcastle United’s very own Mehdi Abeid has spent the last season on loan at Panathanikos in the Greek capital. true faith scribbler. Graeme Wood who lives out in Athens has understandably kept a very close eye on our Algerian midfielder over the last year and in this report gives you the whole eye-witness account of just what Mehdi has achieved and what the future mught hold for a player described only two years ago as one of the most exciting prospects on the club’s books.
THE REAL SPAIN – Tony Che Higgins is fortunate enough to live out in Murcia, Spain and in between plotting the over-throw of capitalism from a cafe-bar in Caravaca has taken his love for Spanish life, culture and history and gone deep into the soul of Spain’s football. This piece is as far away from the gloss and glamour of Real Madrid and Barcelona love-ins as you are likely to find as Tony gets deep amongst the grass-roots of clubs of his adopted country. Tony talks us through the Ultra culture of those clubs well off the SKY radar, their political affiliations and their rivalries. If you want to learn a lot more about real Spanish football, then you should not miss this piece as a brilliant starting point. A Jarra lad originally, it is great to go on this journey with Tony. Absolutely tip-top writing.
THE BOY FROM BRAZIL – Did you know there is a World Cup going on over in Brazil? Did you know that true faith has one of its dedicated scribblers, John Milton living out in Rio – all for the single purpose of giving you the low down on the real story in Brazil as the world’s attention turns to one of the most beautiful but similarly troubled countries in the advanced world. John is formerly of the East End favella known as Heaton so is able to write about the whole atmosphere around the World Cup and the people’s view of it on and off the park in a really informed and fascinating way. This piece really isn’t to be missed.
TALKIN’ ITALIAN – I have a confession to make. There are more than a few of us in the true faith writing circle who are unashamed devotees of Italian football. Scrub that, we just love Italy. One or two of us have a soft spot for Serie A Champions Juventus but in this piece, Peter Embleton, gives us his take on Italian football and in particular his fondness for Italian club, il Viola, Forentina. Peter is a frequent visitor to the beautiful Tuscan city of Firenze (aka Florence) and this is the first in what we hope are several pieces exploring Italian football and the culture around it. This is a really informative and entertaining read from a writer making an impressive true faith debut in this issue.
