As the transfer window draws to a close and we attempt to reckon up the incredible business Rafa Benitez has completed we sadly realise there is no Newcastle United this weekend. Boo!
But there is a full programme of non-league football on the Geordie doorstep for us to think about so fear not you don’t have to spend Saturday afternoon dying inside at IKEA, B&Q et al.
The true faith pick of this Saturday’s fixtures is South Shields v Whitley Bay at Mariners Park in Division One of the Northern League. Both sides are in the upper reaches of the division and have enjoyed good starts to the season. Both Shields and Whitley are well-supported clubs and have real, local identity and represent distinct parts of our Geordie community. It’s to be expected there will be a bumper crowd at Mariners Park with the home crowd turning out in force to support the Claret and Blues and I don’t doubt a good representation of the Seahorses faithful will cross the Tyne to support the Blue & Whites. The more I think about this game, the more appetising it becomes.
Kick Off is at 3pm at Mariners Park and you can pay on the gate.
The region’s number one non-league side Gateshead FC is at home at the International Stadium on Saturday too. Gateshead is at home to Sutton United and in recognition of Non-League Day have put special prices on to attract a bumper crowd. Adult prices are £12 and of that entry fee Gateshead will donate £2 to Prostate Cancer charities. Under-16s are being allowed in FREE accompanied by an adult and that sounds like a pretty good offer to me.
Kick Off is at 3pm at the International Stadium.
Wherever you choose to go this Saturday we hope you have a great time and if you have any recommendations or wish to promote a local non-league day, just do so in the comments boxes below.
If you do go to a local non-league game this weekend, remember to buy a programme, a pie, a pint or a cuppa and a pin-badge etc if they are on sale. Our local non-league clubs need and deserve our support.
That is all.
