The second in our series promoting potential matches for you this weekend courtesy of Mark Carruthers, our resident Non League expert and driving force behind the excellent For The Love of Football, takes us down the Tyne to Hebburn, home of true faith columnist Paully, the town’s most celebrated resident. This Saturday will see a tie between Hebburn and Marske in the FA Vase. Tyneside has a brilliant record of late, so let’s hope its the Hebburnites taking the first steps on the road to Wembley this weekend. Why not go and give them your support … this is Mark’s low down on the game and afew others for that matter.

HEBBURN TOWN V MARSKE UNITED (FA VASE)

This season’s opening round of the FA Vase conveniently falls in line with Non-League DayHebburn and there is a plum tie involving two in-form sides taking place on South Tyneside. Northern League Division Two side Hebburn Town host a Marske United side who until last week were sitting on top of Division One, only to see a draw at home to Morpeth Town move them down to fourth position. Hebburn Town sit in third place in Division Two, however they are only five points behind leaders Team Northumbria with two games in hand on the North Tyneside outfit. Goals seems guarenteed with the Hornets as they average 3.5 goals a game in the League this season, how you score half a goal I’m not really sure but it’s a mightily impressive average nevertheless. A mainly positive season had only one negative as they were knocked out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle by top tier side West Allotment Celtic so they’ll be hoping to do a lot better in a competition the Northern League has achieved consistent success in. The Hornets’ dangerman is Channon North who sits in second place in the League scoring charts with seven goals in his five games including four goals in one game against Stokesley SC. Team mates Shaun Reay and Dan Brown has also been in goalscoring form with four goals. Their visitors on Saturday Markse United ended last season on a high as they beat Whitley Bay in the Northern League Cup Final at St James Park in May. That form has carried on into the new campaign and as mentioned earlier there are sat in the top four of the Division One table, just three points behind leaders North Shields but with a game in hand. Much like their hosts on Saturday they are in fine goalscoring form. A remarkable five days saw them plunder fourteen goals in two fixtures against Penrith and Billingham Town just three weeks ago. In total they have scored twenty two goals in their five fixtures this campaign. Jamie Owens leads the way with five goals in all competitions, closely followed by Reece Kelly on four. Goals seem guarenteed in this FA Vase fixture and who knows maybe even a shock could be on the cards.
