| LIVE WITH THE SEASONS The closing of the summer transfer window last Monday evening brought with it a mixture of emotions. There are those who feel the club has done better than expected (not difficult) and point to the arrival of; Perch, Gosling, Tiote, Campbell and Ben Arfur as evidence of Hughton given a decent break as the club attempts to get back on an even keel after the greed and incompetence of the Hall-Shepherd years, some maniac decision-making in the early days of the Ashley regime which culminated in a disastrous relegation at the end of the 08/09 season. A relegation we will take a while to recover from. | |
| SIGN O’ THE TIMES We were the better side at Molineux by some distance. We created more clear cut chances and on another day with a bit more nous in front of goal we could have been comfortable winners. Yes, we probably got off the hook with what on second examination looked a penalty when Perch seemed to make no contact with the Wolves lad but for the same token, the referee could have acted more effectively for the blatant targeting of Barton throughout the game and sent off at least two Wolves players. | |
| NEVER SO TIRED AS WHEN I’M WAKING UP The opening day trip to Old Trafford was a sobering reminder of where United now is in the pecking order after lack of intelligent investment in the squad and an absence of strategic development from the top of the club. Manchester United will always be one of the best teams in the country but now they are so far ahead of us I just wonder if that chasm will ever be crossed without a complete collapse for the Old Trafford club so we can be nearer them. | |
| THEME TUNE FROM NETTO Here we are then less than a week away from a daunting visit to Old Trafford and our return to the Premier League. The pre-season friendlies have been completed and the sum total of the squad strengthening at the club is James Perch on an undisclosed, an unfit Sol Campbell and an injured Dan Gosling. We might get somebody on loan but we’ve heard all of that stuff all summer. Despite being promoted since April, the club has done very little to bolster the squad and prepare us for anything other than a grim struggle against relegation in 10/11. It is NO CAPITAL OUTLAY writ large! | |
| RUNNING ON THE SPOT Shortly after Mike Ashley’s takeover of Newcastle United, our owner took to wearing a B&W shirt and took his place with the support at various away grounds around the country. Memorably he was amongst us for the derby game at the SoS. A clumsy attempt to ingratiate himself with his new club or not, the obvious intention must have been to frame himself as a supporter. He liked a pint with the lads and he preferred the more earthy surroundings of the away end to the canapés and club ties of the Directors Box. I can’t say I blame him. | |
