In the realms of supporting Newcastle United there are many things that make you want to bang your head against a brick wall. The ownership, the players who have come to take our hard earned cash and baffling management. Added to these must be the most annoying of all, a cross country trip to be welcomed with some of the most insipid play since Souness and his brand of football packed up and shipped out.
In a largely awful first half Leicester had the better of the play and should have taken the lead when Matty Fryatt waltzed through non existent defending after Williamson was beaten for the only time in the game. He was one of the few bright spots in one of the most insipid away displays we've endured for a long while.
Later on in the game Routledge managed to twist and turn, beating players at will but the static nature of the forward players meant that his efforts were in vain. By this stage the home side were down to 10 men when Wellens was sent off for two bookable offences something that incensed the lively home support adjacent to the away following.
Newcastle fielded new recruit Patrick Van Aanholt and after initially struggling with his positional sense he provided some decent attacking impetus and went close with a couple of long rane efforts. Nolan should have scored after a decent ball in from Guthrie, when he put too much on a header.
Leicester had threatened to take the lead but an imperious display from Williamson meant that we kept our goal in tact.
Overall this was a display to forget and is a worrying sign of our continued inability to create chances. We desperately need someone who can see a pass. The ironic thing is that we already have those players in Guthrie and Barton but play them wide right and unbelievably wide left yesterday. Hughton had the options to change this game but failed to ignite his team against another fairly substandard Championship side.
Another point of note is the change of personnel in our away support. Mainly made up of kids and women the atmosphere was poor with nothing to cheer on the field not helping. This is starting to become a theme for the televised games.
Newcastle United: Harper, Van Aanholt, Williamson, Coloccini, Taylor, Guthrie, Smith (Ranger 62), Butt, Routledge, Nolan (Pancrate 75), Carroll.
