Tow Law Town AFC has a very special connection to the charity through their club President – Lady Elsie Robson.
Lady Elsie was honoured to accept the Presidency of the Northern League club late last year and, in celebration, ‘The Lawyers’ have reinstated their popular pre-season charity game, which ran for nine years until 2012.
Now titled The President’s Cup, the match will raise funds for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, which helps find effective ways to detect and treat cancer, and will be played at Tow Law’s Ironworks Road ground on Friday 25 July.
Current and former Northern League players and managers are being sponsored to play in the game, which kicks off at 7.30pm.
Club stalwart and former Committee member, programme editor and fund raising events organiser at Tow Law Town, Charlie Donaghy, says: “We were thrilled when Lady Elsie agreed to become our President.
“We haven’t played a charity game for a couple of years and this seems like a very appropriate time to bring it back.
“It will be a special night and there is still a chance for players to get involved. They’ll be asked for a donation of £20 for the charity or can raise even more by getting sponsored to play by friends and family.”
Tow Law Town credits Lady Elsie’s husband, Sir Bobby, for saving the club from financial ruin in 2001 as gate receipts plummeted during the Foot and Mouth crisis.
The then Newcastle United manager helped with several fundraising events and the money raised was enough to keep the club afloat.
Charlie adds: “Sir Bobby was a great friend to Tow Law and helped us during our darkest hours. Really he helped save the club and then became our Vice President.
“Fundraising for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation is our way of saying thank you. Sir Bobby helped save our club and now we’re helping save lives through his cancer charity.”
Sir Bobby launched his Foundation in 2008. It funds projects, including the clinical trials of new drugs, that directly benefit patients from across the North East and Cumbria and which contribute significantly to international research into cancer.
The President’s Cup is staged with the kind permission of the Durham Football Association. Spectators are encouraged to attend and tickets are available on the door and cost £3.
