The ‘magic of the FA Cup’ will be evident this weekend as Luton Town bring 7,200 to Gallowgate for this FA Cup third round tie. It’s likely United will be attract 35 to 40,000 fans ourselves. Tickets are well priced and fans are advised not to wait until the day to turn up.
Since Rafa arrived at the club Cup attendances have soared at United. I remember last season 46,000 turning up against Preston as we won by six and thousands of youngsters will be able to claim in years to come that they were Conner into supporting United due to that game. We all know what they’ve let themselves in for.
Anyway, loads of parents and children watching United at St James’ with a bumper away contingent who will be delighted to visit our beautiful city. There’s a lot to be positive about here. Remember that when you turn on Match of the Day and the likes of Palace, Stoke and Brighton attract sub 10k crowds to their games. None of them will attract half of the shit we do from the usual suspects.
So that’s the positivity out of the way.
This is a game we don’t need. We don’t need a cup run, we need to stay up. That’s me being negative. I’d love a cup run. I think the manager would love a cup run. We all know who will hope we got knocked out to protect the asset he is trying to sell (allegedly).
It is reported that last season Ashley did his nut at Rafa for resting players ahead of the league cup quarter with Hull. I’ve no idea whether that’s true or not. What I do know is the strong teams put out in the league cup didn’t reappear in the FA Cup as we tumbled out at Oxford in a game which saw a major fight break out in the away. Dreadful day.
So I’d expect more of the same. We’ll probably get to see Aaron’s, Saivet, Haidara, Mbemba and a few youngsters. I wonder if even Grant Hanley will get a game?
I hope Rafa plays at least one fan favourite to get the crowd going and allow them to cling on to something. The game against Forest this season was devoid of any senior players and it showed. Forest are dreadful as well and they left with a result.
Are United’s C team better than the team running away with League Two? Probably. Luton have racked up a positive goal difference of 37 after just 27 game. They will probably score this weekend. So we’ll need to score two.
I hope we do. I hope we win. I hope the club is taken over, Rafa backed and we have a cup run. Like a normal football club.
This is NUFC though. Either way on Saturday – win or lose – the mood on NE1 will be dictated by the result against Swansea. If we were to be knocked out of the cup there’ll be a few social media types crying ‘what’s happened to this club’ (as they haven’t been paying attention) and snides crying ‘imagine the reaction if that was McClaren or Pardew’.
I think we can all do without out that so please make sure there’s a result United. Either way. No one wants a replay.
