VOLUME 3: It's never quiet is it?

Sunday 23rd January 2005

Well another week rolls around and here we are again.  There’s plenty to get through so, as Mary Poppins would say (no not him, Mary Poppins man) “let’s start at the very beginning, it’s a very good place to start.”  So, the post Southampton match reaction was pretty uniform throughout the media.  Not terribly sensational and summed up a win that should have been more comfortable than it was quite fairly.  George Caulkin’s post match report in The Times (Article) the pick of the bunch for me.  At least he tries to make some comment on the club and where we are now.  Compare it to this report from SquareFootball.net from someone who is obviously a Spurs fan. (Article)  An article that is as baffling as it is insulting.  Spurs are constantly over hyped by the media and have been since the Blanchflower days.  Bilious drivel like this just isn’t worth the space it’s hosted on.

We’ve had plenty transfer rumour again this week.  Interest in Bayer Munich’s Kuffour finally ended.  Mind you if the Suddeutsche Zeitung were to be believed the offer’s been there for over 5 weeks now and if he has taken this long to respond forget him!  Distin still remains a target it seems.  He says he’s happy (Article) and (Article) but reading his words I can’t help but feel I’ve heard this before from him, just before he left us last time!  Watch this space I think, especially if they can’t sell Anelka.

The big transfer story has of course been the links to Portsmouth’s Faye and Yakubu (Article, Article, Article and Article).  If Butt is out for a while then Faye wouldn’t be a bad shout in my humble opinion.  He’s certainly no respecter of reputation and fears no one.  As for Yakubu I’m not sure.  Then again the lad’s having a good season and we have to look at alternatives if Shearer does call it a day at the end of the season, and the time to prepare is now, not in the summer and panic buy

Speaking our number 9, as he edges towards more records there’s been plenty of talk about him this weekend gone and whether or not he should retire at the season’s end.  Saturday’s Times trotted out this comparison of his and Milburn’s records. (Article)  Mainly taken fro Paul Joannou’s book admittedly but at least a fair article.  The Independent on Sunday ran a more heartfelt piece (Article) urging him to stay on.  I think if he has made his decision, like the England one, he should stick to it.  I believe it’s a no win situation for him and he should go out whist on top.  A true professional unlike certain other members of our squad.

Enter Kieron Dyer.  Poor Kieron, he’s at breaking point apparently (Article). You’ll forgive me if I don’t shed a tear.  He made his bed at the start of the season and is still lying in it.  My take on it is a simple one.  We’ve heard his agent, our chairman, SBR, Souness and now Dean Saunders say how sorry he is.  I still haven’t heard it from HIM.  And until I do I’ll not even think about accepting any apology.  That won’t be enough for some though, and I can understand why.  What I don’t understand is why Alan Oliver has gone from writing how Dyer should not play for the club again to joining his friends at The Journal in the “give little Kieron a break” brigade.  If he really wants to know how lucky he is Dyer should read this Telegraph piece on David Buust (Article).  Your career is a gift; don’t waste it any more than you already have.

Dyer didn’t make it into this Time list of bad boys in football however. (Article) Our number 10 did, at number 10.  Craig Bellamy also found himself interviewed on the truly awful John Barnes Football night on Channel 5 this week.  Abrasive and anything but charming at least he showed some passion and was honest enough to say he desperately wants to play up front (his best position in his and my opinion) but unlike Dyer will play where he’s asked to and do the best he can.  However I get the feeling we haven’t heard the last of this…….

Speaking of television appearances just which footballer’s quayside flat were the courts
enforcement officers filmed outside of on last Monday’s Inside Out documentary on non
payment of fines on BBC1?  Answers on a postcard please.

Just another quiet week in the world of Newcastle United then!  As we’ve said before here

at tf though.  We couldn’t cope if we supported someone like Charlton where nowt ever

happens could we?
