Issue 36 - Irish Blood, English Heart |
|
 |
The two most reliable, honest professionals on Newcastle United’s
books are Shay Given and Alan Shearer. We put them together with the
predictable Moz inspired line of Irish Blood, English Heart in an
issue dripping in more angst than Salford’s finest ever came up
with. For our summer special, we made the leap up to 48 pages, with
no dilution in quality either. That said, bar a few top Euro
memories, the spawny claiming of a UEFA place and the Mackems
play-off failure, there isn’t much to laugh about. Perhaps the most
telling thing in an issue devoted to bewilderment and
underachievement by arrogant players and incompetent management, is
the quotation of Jackie Milburn’s advice to Malcolm MacDonald when
he signed for us in 1971; these are the people you are playing for.
These men go to work in the dark and come home in the dark. On a
Saturday you can really brighten their lives by giving everything
you can when you’re playing for them. Got that Kieron? |

Issue 35 - French Connection: fc-nu |
|
 |
Another French cover, with Messrs. Bernard and Robert captioned as
fc:nu, very clever that one! Not so clever were the sale of Nobby
Solano, the administrative arse up of the B****r European ban and
allowing Lua Lua to play against us and predictably score, all of
which gets plenty of column inches in this one, which saw the light
of day for the 4-2 cruise past the Scouse Mackems, on which
auspicious occasion a certain Mr. Dyer saw fit to contribute his
solitary league goal of 2004. For the first time, we go public with
the unmentionable; Bobby has lost it and needs to go. Like getting a
sick family pet put down, it’s a heartbreaking decision to make, but
it’s generally for the best. Other top features include a Northern
Soul tribute poster and an interview with Mine Host Terry Mann.
Music wise, we’re shouting the praises of Outkast and Franz
Ferdinand; we know what the kids want. |

Issue 34 - Special |
|
 |
Two-tone tribute time, with Woodgate being described as Special in a
design that Jerry Dammers would approve of. The low-key 3-1 brushing
aside of Leicester was the game in question. In the fanzine world,
we’re unapologetic admirers of UWS, so it was a bit of an honour
when they reprinted one of the articles from in this one; the fact
it was a ritual slagging off of Massive Club citeh may well have had
something to do with it. Another Manc influenced feature was the
brilliant Stone Roses pastiche poster, entitled One Love; I’ve got a
framed one in my bog actually. |
